What size should a printed park map be?

Big enough that a guest can read the site numbers at arm's length, small enough that it does not get folded into a glovebox and lost.

The sizes that work

• Two pages: 8.5 by 11 flat. Map one side, rules and sponsors the other.
• Four pages: 11 by 17 folded to 8.5 by 11. Cover, two inside pages, map on the back.
• Eight pages: Two folded sheets, same finished size.

Finished size stays consistent so the guide fits a dash, a door pocket, or a folder at the office.

The truck cab test

Print the proof at actual size. Sit in a vehicle at the wheel. Hold it where a guest would and try to find a specific site number. If you lean in or squint, the numbers are too small, and that is worth another round of proof rather than discovering it after 3,000 are printed.

Why bigger is not automatically better

An oversized map gets folded, and folds land on site numbers. It also does not fit anywhere convenient, so it ends up in a bin. A guide that fits a dash gets kept for the whole stay, which is when the advertisers and the rules do their work.
